| At this place, also known as Republic Square, one can see the First World War Memorial by Ruy Roque Gameiro. Made in 1942, it was the first sculpture carved out in cement and iron. It is a tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives during the Battle of “La Lys”, on 9 April 1918.
It was transformed into a green space during the campaign “Abrantes Flowered City” in 1942. Also, during that time, it acquired the popular designation of Republic Garden. The author of the project was the architect João António de Aguiar. |
