São João Baptista Parish Church - Tomar

The São João Baptista Church, at the historic centre of Tomar, is a temple from the late gothic style, built at the orders of King Manuel I over the previous chapel with the same evocation. It was finished at the beginning of the 16th century.

Find the symbolic of D. Manuel (royal coat of arms, armillary sphere and cross of Christ) on the tower, pulpit and west and north portals. The spatial structure of the naves is similar to the one of the Santa Maria do Olival Church, enriched by a stone carved pulpit and by a sixteenth-century painting, epitome of the Portuguese pictorial art from the era.

On the outside the three body tower, the main portal and the north and south portals stand out.
