São João Baptista Church – Abrantes

The date of the construction of the São João Baptista Church, a national monument, is not known, but it already existed in 1176. The church previously edified was of small dimensions and should not have been bigger than the space occupied in the present by the central nave. It was renovated in the 14th and 16th centuries.

The main façade is mannerist and on the inside the three naves have the ceiling lined with wood panels, while the chancel’s is in washed stone.

The walls of the chancel are coated with 17th century tiles of chequered pattern and the ceiling is covered with coffer stone. Be dazzled by the eighteenth-century organ carved from chestnut wood and suspended on the wall of the chancel.
