| At the Santiago Church, in Torres Novas, the largely ornamented altar and the altarpiece in rich gilded carving from the eighteenth century stand out. At the altar it is worshipped the gothic wood statue of Senhor de Jesus.
The temple has four lateral chapels, standing out the one of Senhor Jesus de Santiago, which is decorated with symbols of the Passion and where João Roiz, Antão Mogo de Melo Carrilho and Ângela Sigéa de Velasco rest. See also the figurative tiles from the 17th century that cover the church’s walls. According to legend, King Afonso Henriques ordered the building of the chapel devoted to Santiago in 1148, having King Sancho I added to it a church in 1203. |
