| The Santa Maria da Caridade Church was built in 1571 by the Franciscan monks of the province of Soledade. In 1676, it was enlarged and rebuilt following a decision by D. Gaspar Barata de Mendonça, first archbishop of Baía and primate of Brazil.
Architecturally wise, the church features a single dome nave, an altar and two lateral chapels. At the presbytery, on the barrel vault, admire the painting of the coat of arms of the archbishop of Baía, together with the quarter arms of the Mendonças, Vasconcelos, Mouras and Baratas. |
