Nossa Senhora da Graça Church – Areias

The Nossa Senhora da Graça Church in Areias is a medieval temple which was enlarged at the orders of King Manuel I in the 16th century. It is believed that the initial construction had been ordered during the previous century. The reconstruction was supervised by the architect João de Castilho, who was responsible for many works at the Convent of Christ in Tomar.

Admire the sixteenth-century porch which adorns the main façade. Inside, the presbytery covered by a rib vault and the many rounded arches, based on Ionic columns, stand out. The keystones of the vault are decorated with the embossing of the Cross of Christ and the Portuguese coat of arms.
