Nossa Senhora da Conceição Chapel – Tomar

The Nossa Senhora da Conceição Chapel was ordered to be built in 1547 by King João III to be used as his funerary chapel. It is a small temple with three naves designed by João de Castilho. This beautiful specimen of the Italian classicism is the best evocation of the Greco-Roman art in the Iberian Peninsula.

Marvel at the austere sobriety of the proportions and the Corinthian decoration of the capitals.
