Misericórdia Church of Sardoal

The construction of the Misericórdia Church, in 1370, is related with the presence of D. Fernando and D. Leonor in Abrantes to escape the plague which was ravaging the city of Lisbon. The story goes that the Queen received an invitation to visit Sardoal because the village’s fountains were known to help in the recovering of various types of diseases. Queen Leonor enjoyed the village so much that she decided to order the construction of a small chapel. The original chapel was replaced by the current church in 1551.

Admire the Renaissance gate at the main façade in ançã stone by João Castilho, one of the most important sculptor makers of the Renaissance in Portugal. Full of details, which may go unnoticed to the most inattentive, this meticulous work represents the aid to the most deprived.
