| The Dona Maria Farmhouse, in Montalvo, is currently abandoned, but at the beginning of the 20th century it was one of the most prosperous farms in the municipality. Olives, vineyards and cereals were the main cultivated species. Many men, women and children from Montalvo worked there.
The farm fell into decay during the second half of the 20th century. The press was closed to the public in the 80’s, although it had been modernised some years before. The farm had always had extensive vineyards and a lot of olives, so there had been no lack of raw materials for the press. Recently, the Dona Maria Farmhouse was acquired by the municipality of Constância, which intends to transform the place into the future Tagus Farms Museum. The purpose is to preserve the memories of the old agricultural activities through the exhibition of utensils, equipment and tools used in the past and that are real testimonies of a unique time and space, and of a cultural identity that tends to disappear. |
