Silva Magalhães Photography Archive

The Silva Magalhães Photography Archive reveals the history of photography from the 19th to the 20th centuries, while taking you in a journey along the city’s and municipality’s way of living.

Created in 1996, initially it only comprised a collection given by José António de Magalhães Soares, grandson of António da Silva Magalhães, first photographer from Tomar. The majority of the works are, however, by Mário Nery de Magalhães. There are many studio portraits which are records of the clothes, customs, popular associations and professions of the time.

Later the archive also received new collections, as the one which belonged to António Passaporte. Festivities, events and the daily life of Tomar, during the 50’s and the 60’s of the 20th century, are represented on 958 items, such as film and glass negatives, but also illustrated postcards and order forms.
