| This bridge was the first one to be built over the Tagus in Portuguese territory. It is 494 metres long and it was only used for railway traffic until the 80’s. At the time of construction, in 1861, it was considered to be one of the best railway lines in Europe.
The primitive bridge, whose structure rested over cast iron tubular pillars, of which only half rested on rock, revealed technical problems and had to be completely replaced. The bridge which replaced it, and whose foundations were the responsibility of the House Eiffel, was built between 1887 and 1890 and its deck rests over masonry pillars. Since 1988 and after rehabilitation works, the bridge started to also be used for road traffic. |
