Railway Quarters

The need to house the railway workers was one of the reasons behind the construction of the Railway Quarters in Entroncamento. The first group of houses for the company workers was built close to the station at Latino Coelho Street at the end of the 19th century. It comprises houses with two floors and four rooms, two on the ground floor and two on the first floor, and a small garden.

During the 20th century, new houses were built in Vila Verde and Bairro Camões. The last one has the main characteristics of a proper quarter. It is closed, has inner streets, is isolated from the town, as it is at the outskirts, and not everyone has access to it since the entrance is controlled.

The last houses for the railway workers were built in the 70’s. Completely different from the former ones, these quarters do not comprise small rustic houses with a garden. Set in the urban area, they are very similar to the other buildings of the D. Afonso Henriques Street. They are formed by seven apartment blocks, which have four floors, with two apartments each.
