Classified as Public Interest Property since 30 November 1993, it is a true sanctuary of the national speleology, where the visitors can also discover various archaeological sites, which date from the Lower Palaeolithic to the Roman Era. The Interpretation Centre of the Almonda Cave (CIGA) carries out programmes related to the ecological and cultural tourism. At the local there is an interpretive museum space and an auditorium. To visit the caves, it is necessary to previously contact the CIGA. The Almonda Spring Cave covers more than 10 km and is the most extensive karst network currently known in Portugal. It comprises various underground streams which are in the inception of the source of the River Almonda.
