Routes

Set in one of the highest points of the city, the Abrantes Castle was built under the command of King Afonso Henriques, in the 12th century, to be part of the defensive line of the Tagus. In 1173 it was bestowed on the Order of the Santiago de Espada. Until the present day, it was subject to various reconstructions and military occupations.

From the Castle Keep, built under the orders of King Afonso III in the 13th century, see the marvellous landscapes offered by the Ribatejo’s marshes, the Alentejo’s moors and the Beira’s ridge of mountains.

Visit also the Palace of the Governors or Alcaides, which has a magnificent arcade front set in a gallery of arched rooms.
