The castle of five corners in Sertã is shrouded in traditional stories. It is said that it was ordered to be built by the roman captain Sertório in 74 BC and that it was part of a network of forts around Serra da Estrela. However, after recent archaeological excavations, it was concluded that the initial occupation may not be previous to the 10th or 11th centuries.

It is also the stage of a legend related with the origin of the name of the village.  Celinda, a brave woman, drove out the romans by throwing a frying pan (“sertage”) with boiling olive oil.

In the 18th century the castle was almost in ruins. The situation was only solved in 1936, when, after a popular petition, one of the towers of the castle and the São João Baptista Chapel, attached to it, were rebuilt.
